So often people with a disability are seen as 'different' or asexual. They cannot be seen for themselves, but rather as 'the MS woman' or 'the arthritic man', or 'that spastic'. They need to be addressed as 'a person with MS' or 'a person with arthritis' or 'a person who has cerebral palsy'. As supervisors it is of utmost importance that the language we use is a model for our supervisees and client group. The supervisor has a responsibility to provide a knowledge base of appropriate and non-offensive language when working with supervisees.

He a lso acknowledged that his responses to her might not be perfect and invited her to correct him. This position on his part eventually led the pair to establish a collaborative, enthusiastic and respectful supervisory relationship.
