3╇ Preferences and desires Attempts to avoid some of the problems with hedonism but still retain a subjective account of value are captured in approaches that tie human good to preference or desire satisfaction. Thus, one could argue that what is good for a person is that her preferences be satisfied. Given a person has a preference for veridicality of her experiences, then Matrix-style scenarios are bad for her even if she gets pleasure while embedded in the Matrix. So these views can avoid the ‘experience machine’ problem.

An objective list theorist, then, who takes perfectionism seriously, will hold that pleasure is good but not the only intrinsic good. There is also intrinsic value to developing our rational capacities, pushing ourselves to achieve, and so forth. 12 On her view, part of a person’s good is being able to reflect about what is good for her and make plans. This is a good irrespective of its instrumental benefits. This is because reflection constitutes part of what it is to be good as a human being.

He simply held that the higher pleasures were superior to the lower, so that if one were to choose one would choose a life that had the higher as opposed to one devoid of the higher. Further, there is nothing in the concept of ‘intrinsic’ that would preclude viewing both pleasures as intrinsically good. Thus, one could argue that there are sensory pleasures that are intrinsically good (and we can argue about whether there is some common element to these pleasures, but like Feldman I am inclined to doubt this), and there are pleasures that involve some sort of cognitive or rational element and these, also, are intrinsically good, and perhaps even better than the first.
