I eat badly and I almost never have time to exercise. I decided I needed help. A friend recommended a life coach. I was sceptical but it was worth a try. At the first session I talked about my work problems. He made me make a list of all the things I hoped to achieve by the end of our coaching sessions. They were: sort out my tax situation; sort out my filing; sort out my address system; get fit; eat better; spend more time with my family. We decided to work on the filing, tax and address book issues, as these were directly work related.

He could use a daily, weekly or monthly journal to plan his fitness and exercise programme. Research shows that diary keeping helps us to make sense of unorganized information and helps us reach our goals more quickly and easily. What does the research show? Research carried out at the University of South Carolina5 showed that the way managers recorded information about their subordinates’ performance at work affected the way they appraised the performance. If they organized the information according to the person, their appraisals were more accurate than if they organized their information according to the tasks they completed.
