Meshes are further divided according to how meshed they are. A hybrid mesh (sometimes called a partial mesh) simply has multiple paths available somewhere in the network. Multiple paths may not be available to all devices, but at least one redundant path must exist. Figure 3-15 shows an example of a hybrid mesh. Figure 3-15: A hybrid mesh A full mesh, on the other hand, has a direct connection from every device to every other device. This type of connection can lead to increased costs if implemented physically, but it isn't quite as bad (at least in small networks) when done over Frame Relay VCs.
If one device is sending, all the rest must wait before sending. Therefore, to determine the available bandwidth in one collision domain, we must take the maximum speed (only around 6 Mbps is possible with 10 Mbps Ethernet, due to collisions, frame size, and gaps between the frames) and divide it by the number of hosts (five). However, with our segmentation, each collision domain has a full 6 Mbps of bandwidth. So the server in collision domain 1 and the PC in collision domain 2 both have a full 6 Mbps.
Because of this, if another device causes interference in one frequency, the wireless LAN simply hops to another frequency. This technique also helps the LAN be more secure— someone scanning one particular frequency will have only limited success in intercepting the transmissions. Arbitration Wireless LANs lend themselves to much larger hurdles relative to collisions. In a wireless LAN, you cannot "hear" a collision like you can in Ethernet. This is because the signal you are transmitting drowns out all of the other signals that could be colliding with it.
