This may seem like a great idea, especially if you want to keep your dog on your own property and still preserve your view. But you can’t rely on it to contain your dog. The way these fences work, underground wiring is installed around the perimeter of your yard and your dog wears a special collar. If he approaches the perimeter, the collar gives him a mild electric shock. You would think the shock would teach your dog not to go near the fence line again, but that doesn’t always happen. Many Beagles don’t care about the shock because the lure of what’s beyond the fence is much stronger.

With Beagles, there’s very little difference between the sexes. Both love people and are sweet and outgoing. As a pack breed, the males and the females are very comfortable around other dogs and do all of the Beagle things you want yours to do. They’ll happily follow their noses wherever they lead them and howl to their heart’s content. Beagle boys and girls may both work hard to take charge of the household or they may be quite content to stand aside and let someone else be the leader. Which way things go is based on individual temperament, not sex.

Some shelter Beagles have behavioral problems that may develop later on, such as separation anxiety or chewing, so you may have to spend more time retraining your dog. Another way to adopt a Beagle is to contact a breed rescue group. Many have web sites that post photos and descriptions of dogs. The NBC also has information about breed rescue on its web site. Sadly, there are always more Beagles who need homes than people available to take them in. This is where breed rescue groups become involved.
